I was recently between jobs. I had a little more free time than usual, which I’m always happy to have as long as there is money in the bank. Listening to some of my favorite self improvement/motivational podcasts two things were suggested that I took to heart.

1. Scheduling fun everyday.
2. Get out of your comfort zone by participating in activities you haven’t before.

Daily fun. By scheduling a fun activity (activities that I might consider fun, a gym class, yoga class, volunteering, just to give a few examples), on a regular basis, the daily monotony of our routines can be broken. It empowers the feeling of making life worth living. I heard James Altucher talk about this in on one of his podcasts and I thought it was brilliant.

Doing new things to get out of your comfort zone. I listened to a couple of interviews from Jesse Itzler regarding his book, ‘Living with a Seal’. My main takeaway from these interviews; do the hard thing, this is where we grow.

We hardly remember the compliments or good times. The hard times, the down times, the painful times, this is what plays over in our minds again and again.

A micro example for myself; I brush my teeth after eating dinner, but save flossing for later. With this new mindset, I will tell myself this is where I’m having resistance right now, which is even more of a reason to floss right now.

It doesn’t mean that one has to be in a place of suffering all the time, but having the satisfaction of going through the fire and knowing that your leveling up because of it, can enrich one’s life.

Meetup.com is a great resource for this. Group activities with others supporting you along way, in doing the new and uncomfortable. Two meet ups I’ve recently attended were Naked Yoga, and Rejection Therapy.

Standing naked, doing yoga poses with a room full of naked people sounds intimidating at first. It wasn’t so bad after a while.

Rejection therapy was a lot of fun. A group of us approached strangers and asked for selfies, hugs. Odd requests such as cutting in line or asking a pretty girl out to dinner, with the goal to be ..rejected.

I left these get-togethers grinning from ear to ear. Feeling great having conquered fears. I will be going back!
